2019 BMW M2 Competition Hits The Track With Vicious Turbocharged Heart Of An M3

BMW has gone official with the all-new 2019 M2 Competition sports car. The first notable thing about the new car is that it has a detuned version of the engine from the M3 and M4 under its hood. In M2 Competition guise, that M TwinPower Turbo inline 6-cylinder engine makes 405hp and 406 lb-ft of torque. That heart is an M TwinPower Turbo inline 6-cylinder unit that pushes power to the rear wheels.

Driving purists will be thrilled to hear that the standard transmission is a 6-speed manual unit, while the M DCT is optional for those preferring flappy paddles for shifting. BMW says that the car is good for a 0-60 mph sprint of 4.0 seconds with the DCT transmission and 4.2 seconds with a manual. Top speed for both versions is electronically limited to 155 mph.

Buyers can option the car with the M Driver's Package to raise that top speed to 174 mph. The car has an oil supply system taken from motorsport and uses a revised version of the cooling system from the M4 with Competition Package. BMW gives drivers selector switches in the center console that allow for control of the engine, steering, and Drivelogic functions if M DCT is available.

M Sport seats are standard and have an illuminated M2 logo on the backrests. They are covered in black leather with perforations in seat and backrests available in blue or orange colors. Two new paint colors for the M2 Competition include Hockenheim Silver and Sunset Orange Metallic. The silver is an M2 Competition exclusive color.

The exhaust system is a dual-branch design with a new muffler and four tailpipes in black chrome. It has electronically controlled flaps that allows changes in the sound to be made from a selector switch on the console. The standard 6-speed manual transmission has rev match technology for smoother gear changes. The M DCT has the same throttle blip tech.

BMW fits the CFRP strut brace from the M3/M4 under the hood to increase rigidity. M Sport brakes are standard with blue brake calipers and forged wheels are offered in two colors including a dual tone set or a set with a black surface. BMW says the car will hit dealers this summer with pricing announced closer to launch.
