The 2020 Range Rover Evoque Dons Invisibility Cloak With Virtual See-Through Hood

Did Land Rover find an invisibility cloak a while back and is just now telling the world about it? Not quite, but the all-new Range Rover Evoque comes with a nifty new feature that Land Rover calls Clear Sight Ground View.

Using a series of cameras that are mounted on the side-view mirrors and in the grille, you're given a 180-degree view of what’s in front and below where the hood of the vehicle is. This will come in particular handy when you're navigating trails, climbing rocks, or trying to navigate through crowded parking lots (although it'll likely be the latter despite the Evoque's off-road prowess).

The images from the cameras are stitched together and displayed on the central touch screen on the dashboard. As you can see in the image above, you have a clear view of any obstacles ahead and can see where the front wheels are positioned.

There is also a Clear Sight Rear-View Mirror that provides an HD resolution view out the back of the vehicle. This feature comes in handy if you are carrying items in the cargo area that block the traditional rear-view mirror. By flipping a switch, your rear view is restored by relying on a rear-mounted camera. It also provides a much wider 50-degree field of view. Cadillac offers a similar feature on some of its models.

In addition to the new tech additions, the new Evoque features revised exterior styling that takes some cues from the larger and quite fetching Velar crossover utility vehicle. You'll probably have to look hard though to pick up differences from the first-generation model. Land Rover has dropped the 3-door model (likely due to poor sales), so you'll only have access to the 5-door model this time around.

The vehicle is based on Land Rover's new Premium Transverse Architecture and features a marginally longer wheelbase to expand rear knee room and the cargo area (which is now 10 percent larger). There will be two powertrains initially available, which will be backed by a 9-speed automatic transmission and all-wheel drive. The first is a 2.0-liter turbocharge 4-banger than generates 246 horsepower and 269 lb-ft of torque. A mild-hybrid version of the same engine bumps those figures to 296 horsepower and 295 lb-ft respectively. A plug-in hybrid model will follow within a year.

Unfortunately, there's no word on U.S. pricing or availability at this time.
