4GB RAM Confirmed For Flagship OnePlus 2 Smartphone

Little by little, we're learning new official details about the OnePlus 2, the successor to the popular OnePlus One. By way of a Twitter post this week, the OnePlus team latest reveal is that the OnePlus 2 will feature 4GB of LPDDR4 RAM "so you have more power to do everything you love," whether it's playing games or simply multitasking.

It's worth pointing out that the OnePlus team previously confirmed the OnePlus 2 will feature Qualcomm's Snapdragon 810 System-on-Chip (SoC). This is important because it's a 64-bit part that can take full advantage of 4GB of RAM, whereas 32-bit chips can really only effectively utilize up to 3GB without any special workarounds.

Why LPDDR4? OnePlus says it was drawn to LPDDR4 because it offers twice the bandwidth performance of LPDDR3 at the same power consumption profile. Furthermore, the RAM on the OnePlus 2 will run at a lower operating voltage than the OnePlus One (1.1V versus 1.2V).

"All in all, LPDDR4 on the OnePlus 2 allows an even better user experience when using features such as slow-motion video, face recognition, and low-latency gaming--features that typically use a lot of bandwidth and can cause heavy lagging. Not only will the experience on the OnePlus 2 be smoother and sleeker, but your battery life will benefit as well," OnePlus said.

The RAM announcement comes hot on the heels of OnePlus CEO Pete Lau tweeting out a promise that the OnePlus 2 will be priced below $450.
