Slurpees Take To The Skies As 7-Eleven Beats Amazon And Google To First U.S. Drone Delivery Service

Flirtey, the drone delivery service that made headlines earlier this year for partnering with Domino's Pizza to deliver pies by sky in New Zealand, is back in the news. This time it is for a commercial collaboration with 7-Eleven, the popular convenience store chain. The two outfits completed a month-long test of delivering goods purchased from 7-Eleven by drone to customer homes in the United States.

Welcome to the future, folks. As one of the customers who participated in the program notes, this is like "the real-life Jetsons." This also marks an historical moment for Flirtey, which can now brag that it is the first drone delivery service to complete regular commercial delivers to customers in the U.S. Flirtey said its drones made 77 autonomous deliveries in all during the month-long trial. Furthermore, each and every customer who participated stated they will continue to use Flirtey as its operations expand.

"Flirtey is the world's leader in the drone delivery industry and we have now successfully completed the first month of routine commercial drone deliveries to customer homes in partnership with 7-Eleven," said Flirtey CEO Matthew Sweeny. "While other companies in this space are shipping jobs overseas, Flirtey's goal is to make delivery instant, and in the process create jobs at home for hardworking Americans and veterans. This is a giant leap towards a future where everyone can experience the convenience of Flirtey's instant store-to-door drone delivery."

Most customers who opted for drone delivery received their goods in under 10 minutes. Once and order was placed, 7-Eleven would package the items—including hot and cold food—into a custom container. A Flirtey drone would then use precision GPS to deliver the package autonomously to the customer's home.

Customers of different ages participated in the delivery program, everyone from college students to working parents and elderly couples. All of them noted speed and convenience as what they appreciated most about receiving deliveries by drone.

As to what customers ordered most, popular items included hot food, cold beverages, and over-the-counter medicines, the latter of which has been a focus of Flirtey because of the convenience.
