Watch out, mobile users -- the "ultrabooks" are coming! A few years ago, these things known as "smartbooks" briefly hit the market. And almost no one purchased the. But the ultrabook category just might have legs. Apple's MacBook Air has been a major seller, and there's no question that Acer's new Aspire S3 (their first ultrabook) looks really similar to it. Sorry, it's the truth.
But beyond that, it's something to get truly riled up about. It can resume from Sleep in 1.5 seconds, and the battery can last up to 50 in Deep Sleep days via Acer Green Instant On. Internet connections are promised within 2.5 seconds, and obviously it's one of the smallest and lightest full-fledged machines you can buy.
Innovative Acer Green Instant On technology provides instant-resume functionality and ensures battery longevity, while Acer Instant Connect delivers faster Internet access. The Aspire S3 is encased in a thin, light metal design, measuring 1.3 cm thin and weighs less than 1.4 kg (3 lbs.). It's also equipped with a full-size Acer FineTip chiclet keyboard, a high-density battery that delivers up to 7 hours of juice and a 13.3" HD LED display.
We're told that warm components are smartly placed away from the palmrest and touchpad area, so users won't feel any heat discomfort, and it boasts a new airflow design that dissipates warm air from the rear of the notebook, preventing air from blowing towards the user's hands. Finally, the fan motor is optimized to enhance efficiency and lower power consumption to help increase system battery life.
Specs-wise, there's a 2nd-gen Core i3/i5/i7 CPU, your choice of 240 GB SSD or 320/500 GB HDD with embedded SSD, HDMI output, 2-in-1 card reader, Crystal Eye 1.3 megapixel camera and microphone, 802.11b/g/n Wi-Fi, Bluetooth 4.0+HSR. Priced between €799 and €1199, the Aspire S3 will start to roll out in select regions in September and ramp-up in October, and is expected to become Acer's star product during the fourth quarter. U.S. pricing hasn't been announced, due to this being launched at the European IFA show, but it'll no doubt be coming this way soon.
