Acer Dashes Hopes Of Chrome OS Netbook At Computex

Oh, boy. Internet rumors strike again. Not even 24 hours after the rumor mill "confirmed" that Acer would soon be launching a tablet based around Google's Chrome OS, Acer has stepped forward to address the matter. And the answer, for anxious consumers, isn't a good one. Google's Chrome OS, despite being announced in 2009, has yet to actually ship on any products. With tablets and slate PCs being all the rage this year, Computex seemed as good a time as any to make a debut. Unfortunately, Chrome OS won't be debuting at the show, at least not on an Acer machine.

In addressing the matter, Acer simply stated that they have no "short-term plans" for a Chrome OS netbook, but all hope isn't lost. The company admits that they think Chrome OS is "without doubt an exciting product," further stating that they are "naturally interested in any product or service that enhances the overall experience of its products and will of course be following the development and progress of Google Chrome and the evolution of Google's overall product strategy very closely."

We obviously aren't going to read between the lines too much, but that sure sounds a lot like "We'll have a Chrome OS product, but just not next month." Here's hoping!

Acer will not launch a Chrome OS netbook at Computex

Manno, 17 May 2010 – Despite recent rumours in the press regarding the launch of Chrome OS based netbooks at Computex, Acer today confirms that it has no short-term plans for such a product.

Acer believes that Google Chrome OS is without doubt an exciting product announcement and deserves it's full attention as well as an in-depth study of its potential from a consumers perspective.

Acer is naturally interested in any product or service that enhances the overall experience of its products and will of course be following the development and progress of Google Chrome and the evolution of Google's overall product strategy very closely.
