Acer Swift 5, Switch 7 Black Edition And Spin 5 Portables Adopt Intel Kaby Lake-R

Acer wasted no time pouncing on Intel's 8th generation Kaby Lake Refresh (Kaby Lake-R)  processor lineup for ultrabooks and other thin and light systems. These new processor options are the foundation for Acer's next-generation Swift, Spin, and Switch models, and specifically the Swift 5 (ultralight), Spin 5 (convertible), and Switch 7 Black Edition (stylish detachable 2-in-1).

Acer Spin 5

"The new generation of Swift, Spin and Switch notebooks from Acer intersect functionality and mobility with the power and performance of Windows 10," said Peter Han, Vice President, Partner Devices and Solutions, Microsoft Corp. "Light, sleek and powerful, these notebooks are three great options for anyone that uses their PC for productivity or entertainment, at home, in the office, or on the road."

Intel's 8th generation Kaby Lake-R processors are the first to bring four physical cores and eight threads to ultrabooks. When comparing 8th generation Core i7 Kaby Lake-R processors to 7th generation Kaby Lake CPUs, Intel claims the newer chips are up to 40 percent faster, which takes into consideration the additional cores and threads.

As to Acer's lineup, the Spin 5 is a lightweight laptop in a "head-turning metal casing." The 13.3-inch model weighs in at 1.5kg and measures 15.9mm thin, while the 15.6-inch variant is just over 2kb and 17.9mm at the waistline.

In addition to Kaby Lake-R CPUs, these systems can be equipped with up to 16GB of DDR4 memory and discrete NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1050 graphics (15.6-inch model), and boast up to 13 hours of battery life.

The Spin 5 will be available next month starting at $799.

Acer Swift 5

The Swift 5 is for folks who want a more traditional laptop, one with a premium look. Acer claims it used a "sophisticated selection of materials" in its construction, whatever that means. More concrete is the mention of ultralight magnesium-lithium allows for the top and bottom cover, and magnesium allows for extra sturdiness at the palm rest.

Like the others, the Swift 5 is powered by Intel's Kaby Lake-R lineup. It has a Full HD IPS touchscreen, Dolby Audio, 2x2 802.11ac Wi-Fi, and up to 8 hours of battery life to users through the work day. It's also incredibly light at less than 1kg.

The Swift 5 will be available in December starting at $1,000.

Finally, there is the Switch 7 Black Edition. Acer pitches this as the world's first fanless 2-in-1 notebook with discrete graphics, which is made possible by utilizing Acer's dual LiquidLoop cooling technology (basically heatpipes).

More specifically, this system pairs Kaby Lake-R with NVIDIA's GeForce MX150 graphics. The result is a potent foundation in a setup that is designed for mobility—it tips the scales at just 1.15kg with the keyboard detached.

This is also the first system from Acer to feature its AutoStand, a fancy name for a patented kickstand that can be auto-deployed and auto-retracted, providing single-handed operation.

Other features include a 13.3-inch IPS display with a 2256x1504 resolution, an embedded stylus powered by Wacom, and Windows Hello support.

The Switch 7 Black Edition will ship in December starting at $1,699.
