It's been over a decade since the first installment in the Call of Duty: Modern Warfare franchise was launched, and its publisher Activision feels that now is the perfect time to reboot the series. This time around, Infinity Ward is at the helm developing the game and it will see players thrust into a modern-day conflict that has the potential to tip the scales with respect to the global geopolitical balance of power.

Let's get this out of the way first: the new Modern Warfare goes back to the basics and brings back the single-player campaign that was removed from Black Ops 4. The game was built from the ground-up with an all-new game engine, and it brings native support for real-time ray-tracing via Microsoft DXR. That means that gamers with NVIDIA GeForce RTX cards will be able to enjoy ultra-realistic shadow, lighting, and reflection effects as they claim ground throughout the battlefield. Ray-tracing will also be supported on Pascal-based GeForce GTX cards, but you can expect performance to be dramatically better with hardware-assisted GeForce RTX cards with RT cores on board. You'll also find variable rate shading support as well for both Pascal and Turing-based NVIDIA GPUs.

Also, along for the ride is support for 4K HDR, world volumetric lighting, a hybrid tile-based streaming system and spectral rendering (to enhance in-game night vision optics).

Activision is doing away with a paid Season Pass when it comes to additional maps and gear. Infinity Ward will instead be providing loads of free content for gamers. Another big change is that Modern Warfare will support cross-play for multiplayer.

"With the launch of Modern Warfare, the team is taking steps to unite the community," writes Activision. "First, the team plans for Modern Warfare to be played together across PC and console through cross-play support."

Does that mean that PC, Xbox One and PS4 players will all be thrown into the fray together, or just PS4 and Xbox One gamers? We don't know at this point, but we'll keep you posted on any updates.

"Second, we’re eliminating the traditional season pass, so that we can deliver more free maps and content as well as post-launch events to all players. This is just the beginning – there’s much more to come.”
