Amazon announced today that it has completed its purchase of video doorbell and security camera maker Ring. The internet retail giant first announced its intention to acquire Ring for $1 billion back in late February, and was able to relatively quickly seal the deal.

"Together with Amazon, we will accelerate our mission dramatically by connecting more neighbors globally and making our security devices and systems more affordable and accessible," said Ring CEO Jamie Siminoff. "The entire Ring team is excited to continue working hard to create products and services that bring real benefits to people’s lives and build safer communities for all our neighbors.”

"We will continue to move quickly and work hard to empower customers with a suite of security solutions that provide an affordable, effective way to secure homes and neighborhoods," added Dave Limp, SVP of Amazon Devices and Services.

Amazon is making its mark right away by slashing the price of the first-generation Ring Video Doorbell. The device was previously priced at $179.99, but Amazon has permanently dropped the price to a much more palatable $99.99. The device has a 720p camera sensor that can record at 30fps and the video doorbell provides two-way audio. You can check-in on what's happening outside your home from anywhere in the world, and you can receive push notifications regarding activity and view video footage from your smartphone.

Amazon has big aspirations for its smart home products, and Ring is just one part of the puzzle. The company also acquired Blink back in late 2017. Blink makes a lineup of battery-operated "intelligent" security cameras for indoor or outdoor use. It also markets a video doorbell similar in concept to Ring's offering.

Coupled with Amazon's existing lineup of Echo and Fire devices, the company is building an impressive portfolio of hardware products that integrate with its vast ecosystem.
