Amazon Inks Multi-Year LOVEFiLM, NBCUniversal Agreement

Here in the U.S., the top dog in streaming video is Netflix, but over in the U.K., Amazon's LOVEFiLM service gives Netflix a run for its money. Competition is about to heat up, too, now that Amazon signed an exclusive multi-year digital agreement with NBCUniversal, which will provide LOVEFiLM members with streaming access to Universal Pictures during the second pay window.

"LOVEFiLM is proud to offer its members access to the highest quality content across multiple platforms from another of the world’s most respected studios. NBCUniversal is also LOVEFiLM’s latest exclusive streaming deal in our quest to deliver the widest choice of content on as many platforms as possible," said Jim Buckle, MD of LOVEFiLM.

Both recent and new release Universal Picture content can be accessed via LOVEFiLM, with subscription plans starting at £4.99 a month on over 175 devices, including PC, Mac, PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, and Apple's iPad.

Amazon purchased LOVEFiLM back in January 2011 and now has over 2 million members in the U.K., Germany, Sweden, Denmark, and Norway. It's been referred to as the Netflix of Europe, and there have been rumors that Amazon is trying to launch LOVEFiLM in the U.S. as well, though it's been fairly quiet on that front recently.
