AMD Leaks 32-Core 2nd Gen Threadripper Cinebench Scores Crushing Intel Core i9-7980XE
Plenty of people have been spilling the beans on the AMD's second generation Ryzen Threadripper processors before they are officially launched, including at times AMD itself, which has been teasing a beastly 32-core/64-thread SKU since Computex. AMD France just took it a step further, however, by indicating how much faster its 32-core Threadripper 2990WX is compared to Intel's Core i9-7980XE in Cinebench R15.
"The Intel Core i9-7980XE earned 3,335.2 points on average in the benchmark, while the AMD Ryzen Threadripper 2990WX achieved 5,099.3 on average, or 5,099.3 / 3,335.2 = 153 percent) 53 percent faster than the Intel Core i9-7980XE, AMD France stated.
AMD France is billing the Threadripper 2990WX as being the most powerful desktop processor in the world. It is certainly the burliest high-end desktop (HEDT) CPU available. While we not have any scores to share at the moment, it is totally conceivable that the 32-core part would outpace the Core i9-7980XE by a wide margin, as AMD France claims.
The Core i9-7980XE is Intel's flagship HEDT processor, though compared to the Threadripper 2990WX, it has far fewer cores and threads to throw at workloads—it features 18 cores and 36 threads. AMD's flagship HEDT part has 44 percent more cores, in other words, and Cinebench R15 is one of those applications that can make efficient use of multiple cores and threads.
AMD's testbeds consisted of the Threadripper 2990X plopped into an unspecified X399 motherboard and the Intel Core i9-7980XE installed into a Gigabyte X299 Aorus Gaming 9 motherboard, both with 32GB (4x8GB) of DDR4-3200 RAM, a GeForce GTX 1080 graphics card, Samsung 850 Pro solid state drive, and Windows 10 Pro 64-bit.
