AMD’s 3rd Gen Ryzen Threadripper Zen 2 Processors Rumored For November 7 Unveil
AMD is on the cusp of launching its third-generation Ryzen Threadripper processors based on its 7-nanometer Zen 2 CPU architecture, though the exact release date is still a mystery. Well, officially, anyway. Unofficially, it is said the new round of Threadripper chips will debut on Thursday, November 7.
Going by what AMD has already announced, there are just three things we know for sure. One is that third-gen Threadrippers are coming. The second thing is they will be launching in November. And the final bit of official information is there will be a model with 24 cores and 48 threads making a debut at the very beginning.
That said, the folks at Videocardz posted what they claim are official details on the launch, which notably includes embargo lifts and a roadmap of sorts pertaining to the upcoming high-end desktop (HEDT) Threadripper CPUs. Here are the dates as outlined...
- September 20, 2019: 3rd gen Threadripper teaser
- November 5, 2019: Threadripper 3970X and 3960X product pages go live (no pre-sale)
- November 19, 2019: 3rd gen Threadripper embargo lifts (reviews can go llve)
- January 2020: Threadripper 3990X launch
Note the November 5 launch date, which is today. According to the site, a source told it that has been changed, and AMD now plans on launching its third-gen Threadripper CPUs on November 7. Since we are dealing with rumors and apparently leaked information, all we can do is wait and see.
Another wrinkle is the Threadripper 3990X launch. While supposedly slated to launch in January 2020, the unnamed source says AMD will tease the top-end SKU at the same time it launches the Threadripper 3970X and Threadripper 3960X, on November 7. If that's the case, we would not be surprised if AMD revealed the core count, but left other details (like clockspeeds and cache) under wraps.
The last bit of leaked information from this particular source is that AMD's motherboard partners will unveil TRX40 boards for the new platform on November 7. This makes sense, assuming everything else is true. Whether it all is or not, we'll find out in a couple of days.
