AMD Radeon R9 Nano Performance Per Watt Nearly Doubles R9 290 X According To Leaked Slides
You may have noticed that the bigger the graphics card, the better the performance. It's not a hard and fast rule, though it often applies, or at least it used to. AMD is taking a big step towards reversing this trend of increasingly large graphics cards with the forthcoming release of its Radeon R9 Nano.
The Radeon R9 Nano is based on AMD's Fiji GPU, same as found in the Radeon R9 Fury X and the "most complex and highest performance GPU" AMD has ever built, according to AMD CEO Lisa Su. It also uses AMD's fancy High Bandwidth Memory (HBM) architecture, which is a new type of memory chip with low power consumption, ultra-wide communication lanes, and a new vertically stacked configuration that shortens the distance data needs to travel.
What's remarkable about the Radeon R9 Nano is that it measures just 15cm (5.9 inches), which is about half the size of most high performance graphics card. Not only that, but according to some leaked slides that found their way to the web before the card's official launch, the pint-sized part is nearly twice as efficient as AMD's Radeon R9 290X.

Based on AMD's data, the Radeon R9 Nano offers roughly 80 percent the performance of AMD's flagship Radeon Fury X (shown above) and outpaces the older Radeon R9 290X, but consumes significantly less power. That translates into nearly twice the performance per watt of the 290X -- an impressive feat for a card as short as the R9 Nano.
