AMD Allegedly Readying 16 Core 32 Thread Ryzen Beast CPU With Quad-Channel DDR4

AMD has ascended back into the performance category with its Ryzen processor lineup, though anyone who thinks the company is finished climbing is in for a surprise. Rumor has it (from multiple sources) that AMD is readying a new Ryzen chip with 16 cores and 32 threads of processing resources. This monster processor will sit in a new platform that competes with Intel's X99 chipset for Broadwell-E and Haswell-E, and will serve as an in-between for AMD's regular Ryzen lineup and its server-based Naples platform.

The 16-core/32-thread Ryzen part will be based on an X399 socket that is designed to go toe-to-toe with the best Intel has to offer. That means quad-channel DDR4 memory support, and while further details are light, we would not be surprised if it offered up more PCI-Express lanes to support multiple graphics cards and multiple NVMe solid state drives running at full speed.
It is said the 16-core part will have two MCM dies and run at 2.4GHz to 2.8GHz, with a rated TDP of around 150W. We will have to wait and see if those clockspeeds are correct, as none of the AMD's existing Ryzen processors run slower than 3GHz. It's slowest clocked part is the Ryzen 7 1700, an 8-core/16-thread CPU with a 3GHz base frequency and 3.7GHz turbo clock.

AMD's upcoming processor will have twice as many cores as the Ryzen 7 series, though dropping all the way down to 2.4GHz would be a bit of a buzz kill, at least for applications that are not heavily threaded. For applications that can take advantage of multiple cores and threads, it is worth pointing out that AMD's beastly chip will have six more cores and 12 more threads than Intel's Core i7-6950X.

Over at ChipHell, a Chinese-language web forum, rumor has it AMD will announce the new processor and platform at Computex. It is also said that the chip around half the price of competitive Xeon CPUs, with an asking price of around $1,000 (or less for some SKUs).
