AMD Releases Catalyst 15.9 Drivers Just In Time For Star Wars: Battlefront Beta

We learned late last week that the beta launch for the hugely anticipated Star Wars Battlefront will drop on October 8. That means just one thing: both AMD and NVIDIA have scrambled to get their engineering teams to churn out optimized drivers.

As it so happens, AMD is the first out the door with one. This isn't a huge surprise, though, as the company seems to be keeping well in tune with the game's developers. This past summer, during the company's Fury family reveal, it helped wrap the event up with an exclusive trailer for Battlefront. I wouldn't be the least bit surprised if AMD announced a promotion in the near future which bundles the game with its cards. It would be nice, at least.

Nonetheless, AMD highlights that its 15.9 Catalyst driver - which is a beta itself - includes performance and quality enhancements for Battlefront. Interestingly, it also includes optimizations for Fable Legends' DirectX 12 benchmark, one where it already dominates the competition.

As you'd expect, this driver also brings a number of bug fixes; a couple of important ones with this driver include the fixing of BenQ's 144Hz Freesync monitor going out of sync (ironically enough) when uninstalling the AMD driver, as well the patching of a bug that prevented the Catalyst Control Center from properly updating to a new driver.

There are a number of known issues with this driver as well, with one in particular being relevant to those hoping to play the Battlefront beta with CrossFire: "Flickering may be experience if AMD Crossfire is enabled". Also notable are Grand Theft Auto V crashes that can occur specifically on the Radeon R9 390X.
