AMD Can't Satisfy Red Hot Ryzen 9 3900X Demand Sending Prices Skyrocketing

By all accounts, AMD knocked it out of the park when it launched the Ryzen 3000 family of 7nm Zen 2 processors earlier this month (check out our review here). Not only did AMD strengthen its position with multi-threaded performance (long a strong suit), but the company also beefed up its sometimes lacking single-threaded performance. Couple the excellent all-around performance with attractive price points, and you can see why enthusiasts have been quick to snap up the processors.

However, there's one particular SKU that has proved to be elusive to enthusiasts: the Ryzen 9 3900X. This is the current flagship of the Ryzen 3000 family; well, at least until the Ryzen 9 3950X arrives in September. Priced at $499, the processor goes head-to-head with Intel's Core i9-9900K.

The processor is coming up as out of stock-- as first noticed by PC World -- at many of the major retailers across the web, including popular destination Amazon. The same goes for perennial favorites like Best BuyNewegg and Micro Center. Even take a trip over to B&H Photo shows that the processor is currently out of stock.

One of the few places to actually get a Ryzen 9 3900X is on the secondary market, which means places like eBay. There, the processor is running for $650 and higher when you factor in shipping, which is quite the premium for the high-performing processor. So, if you must have a Ryzen 9 3900X at the moment, it looks as though eBay is your best -- at least until AMD can get production levels in check to even out the supply.

With that being said, the rest of the members of the Ryzen 3000 family are readily available at the moment, and can be found at Amazon and Newegg (in the case of the Ryzen 7 3800X) using the following links:

  • Ryzen 7 3800X: $399
  • Ryzen 7 3700X: $329
  • Ryzen 5 3600X: $249

The Ryzen 9 3900X supply woes, however, have us wondering if we'll see a repeat when the 16-core, 32-thread Ryzen 9 3950X arrives in a couple of months. In the mean time, be sure to check out our look at IPC performance on the Ryzen 9 3900X versus the Intel Core i9-9900K right here.
