AMD Ryzen Pro Secures Key Design Wins In Commercial Market With Performance Dell, Lenovo, And HP Workstations
Back in late June, AMD announced that it would be rolling out a Ryzen Pro line of CPUs aimed at desktops in the professional workplace. Today is the day that products with Ryzen Pro inside launch and AMD counts some of the biggest names in the computer industry as partners with workstations and desktops from Dell, Lenovo, and HP coming. AMD's Kevin Lensing spent a bit of time laying out what AMD is cooking up with Ryzen Pro noting that this is part of AMD's "return to innovation for high-performance PCs."
Ryzen Pro is a commercial CPU for AMD with the consumer Ryzen 7, Ryzen 5, and Ryzen 3 parts having previously launched. The Ryzen part that computer enthusiasts are most excited about are the Threadripper CPUs that launched back on August 10. AMD isn't done with Ryzen after the launch of the Pro parts, however; it still has more to come in the mobile sector including a mobile Ryzen Pro aimed at mobile workstations set to launch in the first half of 2018. A Ryzen Mobile APU is set for launch sometime in late Q3 or early Q4.
Ryzen Pro is aimed at mainstream business users that are working with productivity apps, basic content creation, advanced multitasking, and VR consumption. Ryzen Pro parts are also aimed at power users working with premium content creation, scientific apps, premium VR, and machine learning (among other things). The processor family supports up to eight cores and 16 threads with operating frequencies up to 3.7 GHz with Precision boost. AMD crams in up to 20MB of L2+L3 low latency cache inside Ryzen Pro chips and uses AMD SenseMI tech inside. Ryzen 7 Pro 1700 promises to deliver up to 62% more multi-threaded performance than select competing products from Intel.
The AMD SenseMI Technology is processor-level machine intelligence with features like smart prefetch, neural net prediction, precision boost, and pure power. AMD says that its Ryzen 7 Pro parts perform 63% better on Cinebench, 33% better on Passmark 9 CPU, 27% better on Geekbench multicore, and 4% better on Symark 2014 than an Intel Core i7 4 core, 8 thread processor. Ryzen 5 Pro 6 core, 12 thread parts perform 92% better on Cinebench, 51% better on passmark 9 CPU, 39% better on Geekbench multicore, and 14% better on Sysmark 2014 than an intel Core i5 4 core, 4 thread CPU.
Lenovo will be cramming the Ryzen Pro parts inside its ThinkCentre M715 tower and small form factor workstation featuring TPM 2.0 chip and Dash Manageability. Dell has its OptiPlex 5055 series of workstations that will combine AMD Ryzen Pro CPUs with AMD discrete graphics supporting multiple displays and ultimate visual performance. Dell's machines will also support out-of-band management and feature a tool-less design for expansion and upgrading. These machines have space-saving designs for crowded offices.
