Alleged AMD Ryzen Threadripper 3960X Benchmark Confirms 24 Cores, 48 Threads
Somewhere within the Ashes of the Singularity (AOTS) benchmark database is a reference to an unreleased third-generation Ryzen Threadripper processor, the 3960X. Assuming the database entry is accurate, the Threadripper 3960X will hit the ground running with 24 physical cores and 48 threads of computing muscle, though there is no mention of the clockspeeds.
Prominent leaker "APISAK" posted a snippet of the database entry on Twitter. Unfortunately, there are no other revealing details, such as the actual benchmark score or anything else that might help us find the listing ourselves (there's no way to sort through the massive database by CPU model names, so we'll leave this one to the Internet sleuths).

While we can't confirm the legitimacy of the database entry, it's highly plausible, given both APISAK's track record and what AMD has already revealed. As it pertains to the latter, AMD recently confirmed plans to launch a third-generation Threadripper lineup, and further noted it will be "premiering with 24 cores" in November.
That means we are just a few weeks away from the official debut of a third-generation Threadripper chip with 24-cores and 48 threads. Almost everything else is speculation at this point, though we know it will be based on AMD's 7-nanometer Zen 2 architecture, as found on its mainstream third-generation Ryzen processors.
It will also be interesting to see how AMD fleshes out its next round of Threadripper CPUs. Bearing in mind that model names and specifications have not been confirmed, we could be looking at a lineup like this...
- Threadripper 3990X/WX: 64 cores and 128 threads
- Threadripper 3980X/WX: 48 cores and 96 threads
- Threadripper 3970X/WX: 32 cores and 64 threads
- Threadripper 3960X: 24 cores and 48 threads
Whether we'll see any third-generation Threadripper parts with fewer than 24 cores remains to be seen. Such a part would be a tough sell, however, given that AMD's Ryzen 9 3950X with 16 cores and 32 threads will finally make its retail debut next month as well. While technically not a high end desktop (HEDT) processor, the Ryzen 3950X is certainly a burly slice of silicon.
Pricing is also the big unknown here. Barring a last minute change, the Ryzen 9 3950X will launch at $749, so we're probably looking at a starting price of $899 or $999 for the third-generation Threadripper lineup.
