AMD To Provide Technical Expertise In Joining MeeGo Crew

There's a MeeGo Conference ongoing in Dublin, Ireland right now, and AMD is making some fairly big news there. As a little back-story, MeeGo is the realized result of Intel's Moblin and Nokia's Maemo, smashed together to become a powerhouse open-source OS. It's meant to work on smartphones and tablets, and designed to rival Windows 7, Android and a host of other competitors. But as with any new OS, the main problem is gaining support; hardware support, vendor support, and consumer support. But having a major silicon manufacturer on board with MeeGo makes things a lot easier obviously and with Intel behind it there's instant credibility.

Now, Intel and AMD are fans. AMD has just joined The Linux Foundation's MeeGo project, and they will "provide engineering expertise intended to help establish the technical foundations for next-generation mobile platforms and embedded devices." MeeGo execs hope that AMD's efforts will drive plans for an embedded release and create new market opportunities for MeeGo, particularly around the forthcoming Accelerated Processing Units.

Only time will tell what kind of impact AMD has on MeeGo's adoption rate, but we can't imagine having a partner as big as this hurting things.
