AMD Ryzen 9 3950X 16-Core CPU Smashes Intel Core i9-9980XE 18-Core In Leaked Benchmark

Now we're getting some additional insight into how the Ryzen 9 3950X is fairing against the competition from Intel, and things are looking pretty good. Notorious hardware leaker TUM_APISAK uncovered Geekbench scores for the Ryzen 9 3950X, and they include both single- and multi-core figures.

The Ryzen 9 3950X was running on one of AMD's in-house X470-based Myrtle platforms with clock speeds that are actually a bit less than the shipping processor. The prototype chip has clocks of 3.3GHz/4.3GHz (base/boost) versus 3.5GHz/4.7GHz for the official part. Even so, the Ryzen 9 3950X managed to pull down a single-core score of 5868 and a multi-core score of 61072.

For comparison, we got scores of 5490 and 43743 for single-core and multi-core tests respectively in our review of the Core i9-9980XE -- and that's an 18-core processor. Likewise, the 16-core Ryzen Threadripper 2950X could only muster score of 4723 and 35961 respectively in our testing.

Although this is just one benchmark suite, it does at least give us some insight into the processing power of this mighty chip. We also have to caveat that this is leaked data and not officially from AMD. And the enormous amount of cache on the processor could be skewing the results a bit. With that being said, not only is the Ryzen 9 3950X showing some impressive IPC gains over the Ryzen Threadripper 2950X, but it is also givin' the business to the Core i9-9980XE. And let's remember that the Core i9-9980XE costs around $2,000 while the Ryzen 9 3950X will be priced at $749 when it is released in November.

As we mentioned, this is just two data points -- single- and multi-core tests in Geekbench -- but the Ryzen 9 3950X is showing a lot of potential at incredible price point.
