Apple Announces $1 Billion Austin R&D Campus Adding Up To 15,000 New Jobs

One of the big pushes for the Trump Administration has been for American companies to keep manufacturing and tech jobs right here at home instead of sending them overseas. With cheaper labors rates in countries like China and India, companies have expanded their global footprints for greater economies of scale. However, Apple's announcement today is sure to make the current administration beam with delight.

Apple says that it will construct a new $1 billion campus in Austin, Texas dedicated to research, engineering and customer support. Apple says that the campus will sit on 133 acres and will be powered completely by renewable energy. At first, the campus will house 5,000 employees, but has the capacity to accommodate up to 15,000 employees.

To put that in perspective, Apple's current Austin campus, which is one mile away from the new location, currently accommodates 6,200 employees. According to Apple, the city already represents its largest grouping of employees in the United States apart from its Cupertino locations. The two combined Austin campuses will make Apple the single largest employer in the state (if both facilities are at [employee] capacity).

“Talent, creativity and tomorrow’s breakthrough ideas aren’t limited by region or zip code, and, with this new expansion, we’re redoubling our commitment to cultivating the high-tech sector and workforce nationwide,” said Apple CEO Tim Cook.

With respect to its current workforce, Apple has 90,000 employees spread across all 50 states (6,000 were added in 2018). By 2023, the company is projected to add another 20,000 jobs to its tally.

In addition to expands its research and development facilities, Apple has also committed to investing $10 billion into its data centers over the next five years. Part of this investment will be directed towards new data centers along with expansions of its existing facilities in Arizona, Nevada and North Carolina.
