Apple Announces 21.5-inch iMac With 4K Display For $1,499, All 27-inch iMacs Now 5K

It’s been rumored for quite some time, but Apple is now ready to unleash some 4K goodness on its entry-level iMac all-in-ones. The new 21.5-inch iMac can be equipped with an optional Retina 4K display that has a screen resolution of 4096x2304, which delivers over 9 million pixels, which is 4.5 times more than what’s available in the base systems.

Base models still start at $1,099, which will get you a 1.6GHz dual-core Intel Core i5 processor, Intel HD Graphics 6000 and a 1920x1080 display. If you add another $200, you’ll get bumped up to a 2.8GHz quad-core Core i5 processor and Iris Pro Graphics 6200. The new Retina 4K iMac starts at $1,499 and is powered by a 3.1GHz Core i5 processor and Iris Pro Graphics 6200. No matter which pre-configured option you choose, you’ll get 8GB of RAM standard and a 1TB HDD.

It should also be noted that these new iMacs come with 802.11ac Wi-Fi which supports up to 1.3Gbps speeds. In addition, Apple’s is sprinkling “magic dust” all over the place with an all-new Magic Mouse 2, Magic Keyboard and Magic Trackpad 2. The new Magic Keyboard had been redesigned to take up less space on your desktop (Apple says that it is 13 smaller while still retaining full-size keyboard functionality). The new Magic Mouse 2 can pair instantly with your Mac via a Lighting cable, and can last roughly one month between charges. Finally, the Magic Trackpad 2 has been redesigned to incorporate a 29 percent larger surface and Force Touch.

Apple has also shown a bit of love to its 27-inch iMac family, as all models now come standard with 5K displays, which include a staggering 14.7 million pixels. And while the new 21.5-inch iMacs make do with last generation Broadwell processors, the range-topping iMacs make use of of sixth generation (Skylake) Intel Core processors.

The base 27-inch iMac, which is priced at $1,799, comes with a 3.2GHz quad-core i5, 8GB of RAM, a 1TB HDD, and an AMD Radeon R9 M380 discrete graphics card with 2GB of RAM. The top preconfigured option, which is priced at $2,299, still inexplicably includes just 8GB of RAM, but upgrades the rest of the hardware with a 3.3GHz Core i5, 2TB Fusion Drive and a Radeon R9 M395 with 2GB of RAM.
