Apple App Store Makes History with 25 Billion Downloads

Go ahead and pat yourself on the back if you've ever downloaded an application from Apple's App Store. If you have, then you've contributed to Apple's crazy achievement of serving up 25 billion App Store downloads (and to Cupertino's ongoing cash cow).

Apple doled out its 25 billionth App Store download sometime today and hasn't had time to type up a formal press release as of this writing, though there is a banner advertising the accomplishment on Apple's homepage (see below) with a simple (and well deserved) 'Thank You' message.

To put that number into perspective, there are just over 313 million people living in the U.S., according to the U.S. Census Bureau. And there are 6.84 billion people on the entire planet, which breaks down to more than three application downloads per every man, woman, and child in the entire world.

The person who downloaded the 25 billionth app from Apple's App Store will receive a $10,000 gift card redeemable at the App Store, Mac App Store, or iTunes. Apple hasn't yet announced the winner.
