Apple Completes a Busy Day With New iPod touch and iPod nano Models
There was much anticipation for the iPhone 5 announcement today, but many probably forgot that Apple’s iPod line would see a refresh, too.
The new iPod nano is even thinner than the previous version at just 5.4mm thick, but that slimness belies a large 2.5-inch multitouch screen. In addition to volume controls and play/pause/track advance controls, this nano also has a home button, and the device enjoys the new Lightning connector unveiled today.
There’s a built-in FM tuner with DVR-like pause and rewind capabilities, and for the workout warriors among us, the nano has a built-in pedometer. It also has Bluetooth capabilities, which enables wireless streaming, and Apple states that it can last for up to 30 hours with music playback.
As you might expect, the iPod nano is available in a variety of colors, including black, purple, green, blue, yellow, red, and aluminum.
But wait, there’s more--there’s a new iPod touch, too, and it boasts lots of frankly impressive features.
It’s 6.1mm thick and weighs just 88 grams, yet it has the same display as the iPhone 5--that’s 4 inches with a resolution of 1136x640. Under the hood lies the dual-core A5 processor, which Apple says offers a 7x jump in gaming performance over previous generations, which is simply astounding.
The rear camera shoots in 1080p HD while the front FaceTime HD camera is 720p, and iMovie is supported on the device. The speaker is on the bottom of the device, right around where the Lightning port and headphone jack reside. Apple saw fit to include a little metal knob on the back of the device for an “iPod touch loop”, which is basically just a (color-coordinated) wrist strap for extra security when you’re walking around with your device.
The iPod touch is rated for up to 40 hours of music playback or 8 hours of video, and in case you were wondering, yes, Siri support is on board. iPod touches are available in aluminum, black, blue, yellow and red.
We heard a rumor that Apple was redesigning its iconic earbuds, and indeed it has; the new earbuds are called EarPods, and they feature a rejiggered design for better comfort and directed speaker port that aims forward in the ear canal. They’ll ship with all the new iOS devices, or you can buy them separately.
The iPod nano (16GB) will cost $149, while the new iPod touch will run you $299 (32GB) or $399 (64GB). Preorders are available now, and the devices will ship in October.
