Apple Offers Free iPhone 6s Battery Replacements To Tackle Unintended Shutdowns
Apple has begun providing free battery replacements to iPhone 6s owners who have been bitten by a battery bug that causes affected handsets to shut down prematurely. According to Apple, only a "very small number" of devices are affected by the issue, all of which fall within a limited serial number range and were manufactured between September and October 2015.
"If you have experienced this issue, please visit an Apple Retail Store or an Apple Authorized Service Provider and have your device's serial number checked to confirm eligibility for a battery replacement, free of charge.," Apple states on its website.
Apple says there is no safety issue associated with the battery quirk, an important disclaimer in light of Samsung's recent woes, in which he issue a total recall of all Galaxy Note 7 devices due to defective handsets overheating and catching on fire. iPhone 6s owners with a potentially affected model do not have to worry about that sort of thing, though obviously it's annoyance to have a smartphone shut down unexpectedly.
The battery replacement program comes after complaints made by the China Consumers Association over the issue. Some have reported to the consumer protection group that their iPhone 6s model would shut down when still showing around 50 percent battery life. Others claimed the issue manifested on their iPhone 6 handsets, though Apple's battery replacement program is only for the iPhone 6s.
Note that wireless carriers are not participating in this program, only Apple is. Also note that if there is physical damage that impairs the replacement of a battery, such as a cracked display, that will have to be fixed prior to Apple swapping out the battery.
