Apple iPhone 6 And iPhone 6 Plus Pre-Orders Top 4 Million In 24 Hours

As expected, Apple announced a record number of day one pre-orders for its recently announced iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus models. The larger screen sizes proved popular and led to over four million pre-orders in the first 24 hours, as well as a shortage of devices -- Apple says that while a "significant amount" of iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus handsets will be delivered to customers on Friday and throughout September, many others will have to wait until October.

"iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus are better in every way, and we are thrilled customers love them as much as we do," said Tim Cook, Apple’s CEO. "Pre-orders for iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus set a new record for Apple, and we can’t wait to get our best iPhones yet into the hands of customers starting this Friday."

Despite the record number of pre-orders, this hasn't been Apple's finest hour, at least in terms of product launches. Things got off to a rocky start when Apple's live stream for the iPhone 6 launch event kept dropping out, and when pre-orders opened at midnight on September 12, Apple's website buckled under pressure.

Nevertheless, Apple will (rightfully) look back at the iPhone 6 launch as an overall success, especially if the early momentum continues through the end of the year and into 2015. These new handsets are the biggest iPhone models yet, with the iPhone 6 wielding a 4.7-inch display the iPhone 6 Plus toting a 5.5-inch screen. Since the release, Samsung has taken to blasting Apple for imitating its large screen design, which it introduced with the Galaxy Note in 2012.

At this point, Apple has moved well past the Steve Jobs era. When Jobs was in charge, he was adamant that no one would buy a smartphone with a large screen. He was also against the 7-inch tablet movement. However, since Tim Cook has taken over, Apple has released an iPad mini (8.9-inch display), and larger size iPhone models -- it started with the iPhone 5, which featured a 4-inch display, and continues today with the new iPhone 6 models.
