Apple Kicks Off Preorders For Fourth Gen Apple TV, Deliveries Commence Friday

Apple announced the fourth generation Apple TV during its September iPhone keynote and noted that the device would ship in October. True to its word, preorders for the Apple TV are now open. Customers that preorder the device today can expect to see it on their doorstep this Friday.

The new Apple TV, which is quite a bit thicker than the previous generation, packs a lot of technology under the hood including a fast 64-bit A8 processor, 802.11ac Wi-Fi with MIMO, Bluetooth 4.0 and an IR receiver so that you can use third-party remotes. The Apple TV also ships with a touch sensitive Bluetooth remote which features its own built-in accelerometer and gyroscope to support motion control. You’ll also find support for Siri, so you can take command of your Apple TV using the sound of your voice, if that’s your thing.

But perhaps the biggest addition to the Apple TV is support for its own App Store which opens up your HDTV to what will likely be a thriving ecosystem for apps and games. One thing that you won’t find on the new Apple TV, however, is support for emerging 4K content — something that both the new Amazon Fire TV and Roku 4 support.

With that being said, the Apple TV is available in a 32GB model for $149, while doubling up the amount of internal storage takes the price to $199. Unlike the Amazon Fire TV, that storage cannot be expanded via a microSD slot. The previous generation Apple TV soldiers on at the $69 price point.
