Apple Announces All-New Mac Pro With 28-core Xeon, 1.5TB RAM And 32-inch 6K Pro XDR Display

Unlike its predecessor, this Mac Pro is all about configurability and allows PC-style upgrading and expansion inside. It's available with up to 28-core Intel Xeon processors and support 6-channel memory across 12 DIMM slots. Apple says that the new Mac Pro supports up to a dizzying 1.5TB of 2933MHz ECC memory. Inside, you'll find 8 PCIe slots (half of those are double-wide, three are single-wide). One PCIe slot is reserved for a card featuring two USB-A ports and two Thunderbolt 3 ports.

For the graphic professionals out there, Apple has introduced what it is calling the MPX Module, which can accommodate up to two graphics cards. The MPX Module has its own dedicated heatsink, which is cooled by the Mac Pro's internal cooling fans. You can add a Radeon Pro Vega II (14 TFLOPS) or a Radeon Pro Vega II Duo (28 TFLOPS) with the MPX Module. And if you're feeling lucky, you can add up to two Radeon Pro Vega II Duos, which will give you quad GPUs maxing out at 56 TFLOPS.

There are three ginormous fans blowing cool air across the internal components (Apple says that air volume is rated at 300 cu ft per minute). These dans are joined by an internal blower as well to manage thermals. All of this hardware is juiced by a 1.4kW power supply.

Prices start at $5,999 for an 8-core Xeon, 32GB of RAM, 256GB SSD, and a Radeon Pro 580X GPU.

Pairing up with the Mac Pro is the new Apple Pro Display XDR, which measures 32 inches across and can pivot from landscape to portrait orientation. It is a 6K Retina display with a resolution of 6015x2284 and has a consistent brightness rating of 1000 nits. It does, however, have a peak brightness ration of 1600 nits. The Apple Pro Display XDR has a total of four Thunderbolt 3 ports on the back and up to six displays can be hooked up to a single Mac Pro at once.

The Apple Pro Display XDR starts at $4,999 and will launch this fall alongside the new Mac Pro.
