Apple Wakes-Up And Smells The Compatibility With New USB-C To Lightning Cable
Leave it to the creative folks at Apple to take its sweet time fixing a problem it created, and then charging a premium for that fix. To be more specific, Apple is finally offering a USB-C to Lightning cable, which will set you back $25 for the version that's 1 meter (~3.3 feet) long, or $35 to double the length to 2 meters (~6.5 feet).
So what's the big deal? Well, up until now you were pretty much out of luck if you owned a Retina MacBook and a mobile iOS device (iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch) and wanted to tether them, either for the purposes of transferring data or to charge your mobile gadget. Oh sure, you could buy an adapter, but that's just another plastic accessory to carry around—ain't nobody got time for that!
This is the problem/annoyance Apple's new USB-C to Lightning cable solves. For $25 or $35 (depending on the length you need), you can bring tethered harmony to your Apple-brand devices and add to Apple's bottom line at the very same time. Oh, but that's not all.
"This USB-C cable connects your iPhone, iPad, or iPod with Lightning connector to your computer’s USB-C port for syncing and charging. You can also use the cable with an Apple 29W USB-C Power Adapter to take advantage of the fast charging feature on the 12.9-inch iPad Pro," Apple explains.
Faster charging for the 12.9-inch iPad Pro? You can hear owners of the device saying, "Yes, please!" That also means an additional investment of $49 for the optional 29W USB-C power adapter, though if you already own a 12-inch MacBook, you already have the necessary adapter.
