Apple Quietly Introduces Subdued $999 iMac for Education

Apple isn't making a big deal about a new $999 iMac model from its Higher Education store, perhaps because the discounted rig is a bit feature stripped. Another reason could be that it only applies to bulk orders. Whatever the reason, Apple's secret is out, and we have the 411 on what's included with this sub-$1,000 iMac.


It's a 21.5-inch iMac equipped with an Intel Core i3 dual-core processor clocked at 3.1GHz running the show. Other features include:

• 250GB hard drive (7200RPM)
• AMD Radeon HD 6750 graphics card with 256MB of GDDR5 memory
• FaceTime HD camera
• Built-in speakers
• Mini DisplayPort
• Firewire; four USB 2.0 ports; SDXC card slot
• 8X DVD burner
• 802.11n Wi-Fi

The price tag is $200 cheaper than a retail 21.5-inch iMac, and $150 less than the one available to students (non-bulk orders). That one kicks the hardware up a notch to include an Intel Core i5 quad-core processor clocked at 2.5GHz, 4GB of DDR3 memory, and a 500GB hard drive.
