Apple Reinvigorates iPod Touch With 64-bit A8 SoC, 8MP Camera, And 128GB Storage
We reported last week that Apple was set to unveil a next generation iPod touch with a faster, 64-bit processor (the current iPod touch is using the old-as-dirt A5 SoC). We had expected that Apple would use the 2013-era A7 processor for the redheaded stepchild of the iOS family, but the folks from Cupertino, California surprised us with an even more potent SoC.
The new 2015 iPod touch features the current generation A8 processor, which is used in Apple’s iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus. The arrival of the A8 also means that the M8 motion coprocessor is also along for the ride, which allows the iPod touch to function as a pedometer. The rear iSight camera is now an 8MP unit (up from 5MP), but the display (4-inch, 1136x640) and the exterior casing design remain the same.
The other big addition to the iPod touch comes with regards to storage. For the past three generations, the iPod touch has topped out at 64GB, which can be quite confining for those that want to carry around their massive library of music (after all, the iPod touch doesn’t have cellular connectivity for “anywhere” streaming access). Apple has listened to the cries of the few that still love the iPod touch and has added a new 128GB tier.
"iPod touch gives customers around the world access to Apple Music, the App Store and iOS, the world’s most advanced mobile operating system, starting at just $199,” said Greg Joswiak, Apple’s VP of iPhone, iPod and iOS Product Marketing. “With big advancements like the A8 chip and the 8 megapixel iSight camera, customers can experience next-level gameplay, take even more beautiful photos and enjoy their favorite music, TV shows and movies.”
The iPod touch comes preloaded with iOS 8.4, which supports the recently launched Apple Music streaming service. Pricing starts at $199 for the 16GB model, climbing to $249 for the 32GB model and $299 for the 64GB model. The range-topping 128GB iPod touch will set you back $399. The new iPod touch is available today in Space Grey, Blue, Gold, Pink, and Silver.
