Apple has published a new support document that talks about the virtues of using genuine replacement screens for the new iPhone 11 line in case of breakage. Apple says that its iPhone displays have been designed, tested, and manufactured to its rigorous quality and performance standards. According to the company, these standards include for brightness, color accuracy, white balance, and performance for features like True Tone, Night Shift, and Haptic touch.

Apple says that if the screen of an iPhone 11 needs to be replaced that it is important to use certified technicians and genuine Apple parts to repair it. To show techs working on an iPhone 11 model at a glance if the iPhone 11 has a genuine display, a message has been added in the about screen. The message reads "Important Display Message" as the heading and "Unable to verify this iPhone has a genuine Apple display" under the heading.

Apple also warns that users might see an additional message that says, "Apple has updated the device information for this iPhone." That message means that Apple has updated the information maintained for iPhone for service needs, safety analysis, and to improve future products. The notifications won't impact the user's ability to use their iPhone or display. Apple will also place a notification on the Lock screen for the first four days a device with a non-Apple display is used and in the Settings app for 15 days.

Apple has long maintained that repairs made to the iPhone and other Apple devices using non-genuine parts and untrained techs might not follow proper safety and repair procedures. These repairs could result in improper function or issues with display quality and safety. Apple says that improper repairs that don't properly replace screws or cowlings could leave loose parts that damage the battery causing it to overheat and possibly lead to injury.

Apple offers a laundry list of issues that might happen if a screen is replaced without using genuine parts. Possible issues include a multitude of multi-touch issues, including accidental touches registering on the screen and degraded touch performance. Color and brightness issues might also result. Best Buy began offering authorized Apple service in June and Apple expanded the number of Apple Authorized Service Providers (AASPs) in late August.
