Apple Sees 10 Billion App Store Downloads

Is anyone doubting that app stores are the future? Google's Android Market is now home to tens of thousands of applications, and Apple's App Store is home to even more. Rivals like LG and Samsung have also looked at creating their own stores, and Apple is even bringing an app store to their desktop operating system. You could argue that Apple sparked the app store revolution with iOS (formerly iPhone OS), and the spoils of being "first" are becoming more and more obvious.

This weekend, Apple announced that over 10 billion apps have been downloaded from the App Store. It's crazy when you realize that they hit 1 billion in 2009, so an extra 9 billion have been downloaded in less than 2 years! This figure includes downloads by over 160 million iPhone, iPod touch and iPad users worldwide, with the 10 billionth app being Paper Glider. That was downloaded by Gail Davis of Orpington, Kent, UK, and he'll be getting a $10,000 iTunes Gift Card for being the lucky winner.

To date, Apple's App Store holds over 350,000 total apps. That's an insane library, and when you realize that 60,000 of them are optimized for iPad, it's hard to imagine any other tablet maker really taking a huge chunk of Apple's slate market share in the near term. With 2011 being the year of the tablet, we guess we'll have time to see...
