Apple’s ‘Selfie Sharing’ App Store Portal Shows The Selfie is Here To Stay

Teenagers are doing it, and so are young adults. Heck, even some older folks are doing it, and none of them seem to mind having a public audience. They're doing it on trains, on buses, in restaurants, and everywhere else when the urge arises. Some of them do it in groups, others prefer a single partner, and a great many are doing it by themselves. We're talking about "selfies," of course -- get your mind out of the gutter -- which are self-snapshots, and if that's that your thing, you'll find plenty of apps willing to accommodate.

You're probably aware of the some of the more popular ones already, such as SnapChat. But have you heard of Facetune or SnapDash? These are two examples of apps that appear in Apple's new "Sharing Selfies" section in iTunes. That's right, there's now a dedicated section for downloading free and paid apps geared towards taking front-facing pics.

Perhaps this is a passing craze, but more likely, the art of taking a selfie is here to stay. Consider that SnapChat reportedly refused offers of more than $1 billion and $3 billion from Facebook. Why? SnapChat's developers and investors obviously believe there's more money to be made by tapping into cameras on smartphones and tablets.

Need more proof? Consider that Oxford Dictionary named "Selfie" its word of the year for 2013. In case you're wondering, Oxford Dictionary defines "Selfie" as "a photograph that one has taken of oneself, typically one taken with a smartphone or webcam and uploaded to a social media website."

While selfies are probably here to stay, it's not clear if Apple's new section is a permanent one or not. For now, it's populated with a dozen apps.
