ASUS Debuts ProArt PA32UCX And PQ22UC 4K HDR Monitors With Dolby Vision Support
ASUS is showing off some new monitors at the National Association of Broadcasters (NAB) Show. Two of note include the ProArt PA32UCX and ProArt PQ22UC. According to ASUS, its newest ProArt displays are the first computer monitors to support Dolby Vision, a form of high dynamic range (HDR) that competes against the HDR10 standard.
On paper, Dolby Vision is the superior standard. It supports up to 10,000 nits brightness with a 4,000 nits target, whereas HDR10 supports up to 4,000 nits brightness with a 1,000 nits target. Dolby Vision also supports a 12-bit color depth (versus 10-bit for HDR10), and dynamic metadata. That latter bit allows Dolby Vision to adjust the brightness levels of HDR content by scene. In contrast, HDR10 uses static metadata.
"Dolby Vision transforms entertainment experiences with ultravivid picture quality, providing incredible brightness, contrast, color and detail to bring entertainment to life. When compared to a standard picture, Dolby Vision can deliver colors never before seen on a screen, highlights that are up to 40 times brighter, and blacks that are 10 times darker," ASUS says.
Both monitors are aimed at graphics professionals. The ProArt PA32UCX (shown at the top of this article) is a 32-inch display with a 4K resolution, 10-bit color depth, and quantum dot technology. Peak brightness doesn't come anywhere near the upper limits of Dolby Vision, but still hits an eye-searing 1,200 nits. It also features over 1,000 zones of local dimming control.
Connectivity options on the ProArt PA32UCX include dual Thunderbolt 3 ports, three HDMI 2.0 ports, and a DisplayPort output.
The ProArt PQ22UC is a bit of a different beast. It's a portable monitor with a 21.6-inch OLED panel, also at 4K. It offers 99 percent coverage of the DCI-P3 color spectrum and has a low 0.1ms response time. Connectivity options include a micro HDMI port and dual USB-C ports.
ASUS did not say when either monitor will be available or how much they will cost.
