ASUS ROG Phone 2 For Gamers Is Coming, Here Is What We Know So Far

ASUS ROG Phone
Less than three weeks from now, ASUS will roll out its second-generation ROG Phone 2. As with the current-generation ROG Phone that we previously reviewed, this follow-up act is an Android handset that is purpose-built for playing games (we also found that the ROG Phone is excellent for general-purpose usage). Here is what we know about the ROG Phone 2 so far.

Launch Date

It was previously rumored that the ROG Phone 2 would debut on July 23. That launch date has not been confirmed by ASUS, which revealed the information on Weibo, a popular social media site in China. Here is the image that ASUS posted...

Display And Hardware

One of the notable upgrades coming to the ROG Phone 2 is a 120Hz display. The first-gen ROG Phone came out of the gate with a 90Hz display, and while that is faster than the vast majority of smartphones, it was not quite on par with the Razer Phone (released in 2017) or Razer Phone 2 (released in 2018), its primary rivals in the gaming phone space.

The 120Hz upgrade is really the only hardware detail that ASUS has confirmed at this point. Incidentally, the confirmation also came by way of a Weibo post last month.

While no other hardware details have been mentioned, we'd be shocked if the ROG Phone 2 arrived with anything other than a Qualcomm Snapdragon 855 processor. That is pretty much the go-to SoC for practically every modern flagship Android phone. What will be interesting to see, however, is if ASUS again opts for specially binned processors with overclocking headroom.

As for the other specs, the ROG Phone wields 8GB of RAM and 128GB or 512GB of onboard storage. It's likely the ROG Phone 2 will at least match those configurations. We also would like to see the ROG Phone 2 retain compatibility with existing ROG Phone accessories, including the active cooler that snaps on its back, and the various docks that are available.

Stay tuned, as we will be covering the ROG Phone 2's release when it happens.
