ASUS ROG Announces Zephyrus S GX531 Ultra-Thin Coffee Lake 144Hz Gaming Notebook

ASUS Republic of Gamers (ROG) today announced the latest upgrade to its Zephyrus line of gaming notebooks: the Zephyrus S (GX531). This time around, ASUS thinned out the frame of the gamming system and added some display tweaks.

ASUS says that the Zephyrus S is roughly 12 percent slimmer than its predecessor, coming in at 14.95mm to 15.75mm depending on where the measurement takes place. As before, the Zephyrus S features narrow bezels, which allows ASUS to cram a 15.6-inch display into the chassis footprint of a 14-inch class notebook.

Speaking of the display, it has a resolution of 1920x1080 and a refresh rate of 144Hz compared to the previous generation panel that topped out at 120Hz. The IPS panel covers 100 percent of the sRGB color gamut and it features wide viewing angles. The display is backed up by either an NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1060 with 6GB GDDR5 or a GeForce GTX 1070 (Max-Q design) with 8GB of GDDR5.

When it comes to processing power, ASUS has fitted the Zephyrus S with Intel's Core i7-8750H Coffee Lake processor, which is a hexa-core processor with a base clock of 2.2GHz and a max turbo frequency of 4.1GHz. Both systems support up to 24GB of DDR4-2666 memory. On the storage front, you can choose from M.2 NVMe SSDs in capacities of 256GB, 512GB or 1TB.

For cooling, ASUS has updated the custom Active Aerodynamic System (AAS) from the original Zephyrus which helps improve airflow to keep this beast cool. There are five heat pipes inside system to transfer heat away from the GPU and CPU and there are self-cleaning fans to cut down on dust buildup. Other features include customizable Aura Sync RGB lighting for the keyboard and chassis, dual front-firing speakers, 802.11ac Wi-Fi and Bluetooth 5.0 connectivity.

ASUS has not yet announced pricing for the Zephyrus S, but this information will be released closer to its September launch.
