ASUS VivoPC X Compact Gaming PC Delivers GeForce GTX 10 Series And Kaby Lake For $799
Gone are the days when you needed a massive desktop tower for high end performance, especially gaming (though we still have an affinity for large systems). For those who prefer power in a compact setup, there are lots of options out there, including the new VivoPC X from ASUS. Powered by one of Intel's just-announced desktop Kaby Lake processors and an NVIDIA GeForce GTX 10 series GPU, the VivoPC X packs a mean punch in a small form factor (SFF) chassis.
The aggressive looking 5-liter chassis measures 2.99 x 10.23 x 11.02 inches, which is plenty small enough to slide into a home theater arrangement like a dedicated console. It would also be suitable for a cramped dorm room or wherever else that space is at a premium. Likewise, anyone simply wanting a smaller system that is capable of high-end gameplay may want to consider the VivoPC X.
ASUS paired a 7th Generation Intel Core i5-7300 processor with a GeForce GTX 1060 graphics card for a potent one-two punch, then surrounded its core components with 8GB of DDR4-2133 RAM and a 512GB M.2 SATA solid state drive. Windows 10 brings it all together, adding DirectX 12 support to a reasonably well configured gaming system that should be able to play any title at 1920x1080. ASUS also points out that the VivoPC X supports 4K resolution displays and features G-Sync, though for gaming, getting consistently playable framerates at 4K is a tough ask of a GeForce GTX 1060.
The other thing ASUS is pitching here is VR gaming, as the VivoPC X meets the hardware requirements of both the Oculus Rift and HTC Vive. It also has the ports—there are four USB 3.1 Gen 1 and two USB 2.0 ports, along with a 3-in-1 audio jack, GbE LAN, two HDMI outputs, and a DisplayPort output.
As for cooling, ASUS says it has that covered.
"Inside, VivoPC X has an efficient thermal design to ensure smooth and stable performance. An axial fan draws in air through side vents and circulates it through the system to cool internal components before expelling it out of exhaust vents. And for additional cooling, a specially designed heat pipe helps draw heat away from the processor," ASUS says.
The best part here is the price. ASUS says the VivoPC X will be available in March for $799.
