ASUS ZenFone 3 Zoom Packs In Dual Cameras, Snapdragon 625 And Monstrous 5000 mAh Battery

Perhaps sometime in the future we will stop calling our mobile devices smartphones and refer to them as smartcams. Think about it for a moment—for many people, making actual phone calls is secondary to taking pictures, maybe even tertiary or further down the list of priorities depending on what else a mobile phone is being used for. Phone makers know this and they're putting an increasing amount of focus on camera performance, a fact that is underscored in the new ZenFone 3 Zoom by ASUS.

Make no mistake about it, the ZenFone 3 Zoom is "built for photography," as ASUS is unashamed to point out. ASUS also refers to the ZenFone 3 Zoom as the "world's best camera smartphone," adding that it is equipped with its best-ever dual-camera system comprising a 12-megapixel, f/1.7-aperture, 25mm wide-angle main lens and a dedicated 12-megapixel, 56mm camera for instant 2.3X optical zoom. That is in contrast to the ZenFone 3 Deluxe, which is a flagship performance phone.

"This setup ensures sharp focus for subjects at any distance. The new smartphone also introduces all-new Portrait mode, which softly blurs the background to bring the subject’s emotions to the fore — rivaling the depth-of- field effects achieved by professional DSLR," ASUS says. cameras.

The main camera is the one that ZenFone 3 Zoom owners will (or should) use to photograph general subjects and macro shots as close as 3.94 inches. For distance shots, the optical zoom lens comes into play. And according to ASUS, this dual-camera setup minimizes the need for digital zoom, resulting in photos with superior optical clarity and less graininess. The different focal lengths also allows users to play with sharpness and blur when taking photos.

There is more to say about the camera because again, that is really the primary function here. ASUS claims better low light performance from the main camera because of its SuperPixel technology. What this does is increase light sensitivity. It also boasts an improved TriTech+ autofocus system with Dual Pixel technology to detect the movement subjects by analyzing the variations between the light rays hitting the two sensors. Fancy stuff.

Budding photographers can shoot and save their photos in RAW format with the Android 7.0 Nougat update. The ZenFone 3 Zoom also provides a full manual mode with extensive camera settings to play with, including white balance, exposure value, focus, ISO settings, shutter speed selection (between 1/50000 sec and 32 seconds), and more. For less experienced photographers, there are 20 automatic scene modes to cycle through.

Moving on, a Qualcomm's Snapdragon 625 System-on-Chip powers the ZenFone 3 Zoom with its 5.5-inch Full HD AMOLED panel. Combined with the high-capacity 5,000mAh battery, ASUS claims its newest handset can last up to 40 days in standby mode on 4G. The battery is so capacious that ASUS even suggests using it as a power bank to charge other devices.

Despite the massive capacity battery, the ZenFone 3 Zoom is a slim device. It measures a scant 7.9mm thin and weighs just 170g. According to ASUS, that qualifies it as the world's thinnest and lightest 5.5-inch smartphone with a 5,000mAh battery.

The ZenFone 3 Zoom will be available next month. No word yet on pricing.
