Atari Brings 100 Classic Games To PC Steam Bundle
I was lucky enough to grow up at a time when the Atari 2600
was the hottest console on the block. It's not that I don't enjoy gaming on today's systems (especially a modern PC), but it was wildly fantastic to grab a controller with a single button and jump into any game without any tutorials, long intros, or other fluff. I don't know if games from that era would appeal to today's audience, but if you want a hands-on history lesson (or want to relive the early days of console gaming), Steam
is selling a bundle of 100 old school Atari titles at a discount.
"Relive the Golden Age of Gaming with 100 of the most iconic Atari games from the 70s and 80s. Now with online multiplayer capability, this extensive catalog includes classic Atari titles like Asteroids, Centipede, Missile Command, and many more, paired with intuitive new controls," the bundle's description reads.
Called the Atari Vault, it includes classics like Yars Revenge, Breakoutt, Haunted House, Missile Command, and of course Pong, to name just a few. These are games that were developed and published by Atari, and as such there are notable omissions from the era, like Pitfall (Activision) and Space Invaders (Taito), but overall it's a sweet list of retro games.
There's been some slight modernization. In addition to playing with or against your online buddies, there are Steam Leaderboards, Steam Controller support, and a new UI.
If you owned one of these growing up, your childhood was awesome
Though the bundle adds some new features, including online multiplayer support, you won't need a burly PC to run any of the games. Just a modest rig with a 2GHz or faster processor, 2GB of RAM, DX11 capable graphics, 1GB of storage space, a network connection (for online play), and Windows 7/8.1/10.
The Atari Vault is currently on sale for $16.99, a 15 percent markdown from its regular $19.99 price tag. If you want to save a few bucks, you better hurry—the sale ends March 31.
