August Adds 24 Hours Of Free Video Recording For Doorbell Cam Users

August Smart Home
There is a brewing battle between companies that are vying for your dollars when it comes to making your home "smart". August is the latest company to strike a blow with the decision to give its Doorbell Cam and Doorbell Cam Pro users [limited] free cloud storage.

August today announced the "Basic August Video Record" subscription, which gives Doorbell Cam users 24 hours of video recording storage for free. That footage can be viewed through the existing August smartphone app's activity feed.

Now you won’t have to worry if you missed an alert sent to your smartphone if activity was detected (either through the motion sensors or when someone actually pressed the doorbell button). Instead, you can just scroll back in time to see the event taking place (within the 24-hour span). You'll have access to saved clips of all activity captured by the Doorbell Cam, and you'll be able to download and share those video clips.

If the free tier doesn't give you enough freedom with regards to recording, you can always opt for the August Video Recording Premium tier. This gives you 30 days of saved video history instead of 24 hours, while retaining all of the other perks of the Basic August Video Record subscription. This premium subscription costs $4.99 per month, or you can pay $49.99 annually.

“We believe video recording is such an important feature for video doorbells that we are adding 24 hours of video recording, for free, with both of our Doorbell Cams,” said August Home CEO Jason Johnson. “Now if you miss a motion notification or experience a porch pirate walking off with a package from your doorstep, you can access and review the stored video from the August app.”

August is likely feeling the heat given that Amazon recently announced its intention to acquire competitor Ring late last month for $1 billion. Amazon also acquired Blink in late December. There's no doubt that Amazon has the ability [and likely the intention] to provide free cloud storage for products made by these companies in the near future. August is just making the first move...
