Battlefield V Returns To WWII, Some Gamers' Panties In A Twist Over Women In Combat

Battlefield V

Developer DICE is bringing the next Battlefield installment back to its roots, with Battlefield V "immersing players in unexpected battles and untold stories of World War 2," publisher Electronic Arts announced. The game promises a fresh portrayal of one of history's biggest conflicts to prevent the genre from feeling stale. And for the first time in a Battlefield game, DICE is including women on the front lines.

"Witness the conflict through the eyes of men and women of World War 2 and experience untold stories of human drama, filled with Battlefield moments. Experience the freezing Norwegian landscapes as a young Norwegian resistance fighter or come ashore into the desert heat of North Africa - and more," Electronic Arts explains.

Battlefield V's trailer focuses almost immediately on the game's female presence as troops storm a house. It takes all of 20 seconds for the camera to start following a woman in the heat of combat. A few seconds later, there's an explosion and gunfire, the latter of which appears fatal as she lets out a howl and crumples to the floor. Just a short while later, we see another female expertly maneuver on the ground outside the house and shoot an opponent, yelling "You're f*cked!"

In the aftermath of the trailer's release, some angry gamers took to social media to vent at what they perceived as a historical inaccuracy. They're wrong, of course, as many others have been pointing out in hopes of drowning out the negative noise.
For anyone who is interested, learning more about women in WWII is just a Google/Bing search away. We'll also give a shout out to PCPowerPlay for its piece on four prominent females who fought in WWII, including Nancy Wake, Lyudmila Pavlichenko, and Gertrude Boyarski, and a group of women known as The Night Witches.

Moving on, Battlefield V will have single-player War Stories, cooperative play in Combined Arms, and new and signature multiplayer modes. With regards to the latter, EA says "Battlefield V multiplayer will deliver the most immersive gameplay of the franchise in a sandbox environment that portrays the battles of World War 2, allowing players to feel the force of the fight and truly shape the war as the war shapes them."

Battlefield V launches worldwide on October 19 to Xbox One, PlayStation 4, and PC via Origin. Gamers who buy the Deluxe Edition will get access three days early on October 16, while EA Access and Origin Access members will be able to experience the Play First Trial on October 11. It's available to pre-order now.
