Bethesda Launches Skyrim Very Special Edition For Alexa, We're Not Kidding
One of the many things Bethesda showed off at E3 is a new Skyrim experience, though unlike previous versions that are playable on PCs and consoles, the new Skyrim Very Special Edition takes aim at Alexa. Bethesda showed off a trailer featuring comedian Keegan-Michael Key barking out Skyrim commands at his Echo smart speaker, and everyone in attendance got a good laugh. It gets even funnier though, because Skyrim Very Special Edition is not a gag, it's a real skill that Alexa users can download right at this very instant.
Let's pull things back a second. It is a gag, in that Bethesda is poking fun at itself, at the smart speaker movement, and technology in general. That much is clear in the nearly two-minute trailer. But it's a running gag, because Skyrim Very Special Edition actually exists. It also shows that Bethesda is fully aware of the amount of DLC that Skryim has generated since it was released seven years ago, including remasters and a release for VR.

Beyond the hilarity of it all, playing Skyrim Very Special Edition reminds of the Dungeons and Dragons board game, only less complicated and there are no dice rolls. The game doesn't take itself too seriously. It's intentionally silly, and perhaps brilliant. What began as a gag is something we would see developers running with, creating adventures for children and adults alike in similar fashion. It's an especially interesting concept in the wake of Amazon launching an Echo Dot specifically for kids.
As for the other platforms mentioned in the trailer, the Etch-A-Sketch, Motorola pager, and Samsung smart refrigerator, we're pretty sure Bethesda is not planning to release any Skyrim ports for those devices. Then again, few people thought Skyrim Very Special Edition for Alexa was real either, until it was.
