BMW Concept 8 Series Is A Stunning Reinvention Of A Flagship Luxury Coupe

The production version of the Concept 8 Series is scheduled to arrive sometime next year, and if past BMW concepts are any indication, its exterior should remain mostly intact with regards to styling. Speaking of styling, the Concept 8 Series is quite sinuous, and has a lot more dramatic flair than BMW’s current car lineup. If it wasn’t for the signature grilles up front, this car could be mistaken for some Aston Martin/Lexus coupe mashup (not that there’s anything wrong with that).

The concept rides on 21-inch wheels, which gives it an imposing appearance, and the rear tail lights evoke the i8 hybrid sports car. Inside, you’ll find a rather traditional (for a BMW) cockpit with a large LCD cluster in front of the steering wheel and another LCD sitting above the center stack. For better or worse, the iDrive control wheel is still sitting there beside the gear level on the center console. With the exception of the steering wheel, nothing inside really looks too far-fetched for the production vehicle.

The production 8-Series will sit above the outgoing 6-Series, and will be available in three body styles: coupe, convertible, and four-dour Gran Coupe. Naturally, the vehicle will be going toe-to-toe with other flagship luxury two-doors like the Mercedes-Benz S-Class Coupe and the Lexus LC.

Although BMW is being mum about powertrains at this point, it’s expected that the production 8 Series will be powered by the company’s twin-turbo charged 3.0-liter inline-6 engine, while upgraded models will get the twin-turbocharged V8 from the upcoming all-new M5. Power will flow to the rear wheels through an 8-speed automatic transmission, while the xDrive all-wheel-drive system is expected to be an option.
