Borderlands 3 Will Be Gearbox’s Next Game, Easter Eggs To Be Scattered In Battleborn DLC

If you’re a fan of the Borderlands franchise, you’ll be happy to know that Borderlands 3 is the next game in the pipeline for developer Gearbox. After leaving development duties to 2K Australia for Borderlands: The Pre-Sequel, it’s definitely good news to hear that the folks who originated the series are firmly back in the driver’s seat.

"We don't even know if we're going to call it [Borderlands 3]. We could call it Borderlands 4 for all we know," said Gearbox CEO and President Randy Pitchford while speaking at PAX East 2016 (which our fearless leader Dave Altavilla attended).

Plot ideas are currently being tossed around for Borderlands 3, but what’s confirmed is that Gearbox “Chief Creative Champion” Mikey Neumann will be the one writing the game. His previous writing credits include the original Borderlands and the Brother in Arms series. Neumann is toying with the idea of creating a new character called Scooper, who would be the obvious son of established character Scooter.

"I did this whole Scooter thing, then I pitch-shifted it up like seven semitones so it sounds like a chipmunk and it was the funniest thing I'd ever heard,” explained Neumann.

Sergi Brosa also revealed via Facebook that he would be lending his assistance as an artist to create characters for the game:

The next installment in the Borderlands series was first announced back in January 25th, with Pitchford posting on Twitter:

Now that the cat is out of the bag and roaming across the kitchen counter, Pitchford went on to add that Battleborn, which is set for release on May 3rd, and subsequent DLC will have plenty of easter eggs littered through the game that reference Borderlands. “There's already a lot of Borderlands easter eggs in Battleborn," stated Pitchford. "But they're all from previous Borderlands games. So what if we put easter eggs for future stuff in the DLC?"

There’s no timeframe yet for the release of Borderlands 3/Borderlands 4, but Gearbox probably wants to at least get Battleborn out the door before it starts committing to any floating launch dates.
