Braggadocios Apple Touts Nearly 20 Billion App Downloads in 2012

While all the eyes in the tech industry are focused on the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in Las Vegas this week, Apple still found a way to make headlines, though not by releasing new hardware. Instead, Apple chose today, the day before CES officially kicks off, to announce that its App Store has notched more than a mind boggling 40 billion app downloads to date.

Nearly half of those have come in 2012 alone, a particularly explosive year for Apple which saw the launch of the iPad mini and iPhone 5, both of which introduced new screen sizes to their respective family of products.

App Store Apps

"It has been an incredible year for the iOS developer community," said Eddy Cue, Apple’s senior vice president of Internet Software and Services. "Developers have made over seven billion dollars on the App Store, and we continue to invest in providing them with the best ecosystem so they can create the most innovative apps in the world."

There are more big figures to digest. According to Apple, the App Store has over 500 million active accounts. There are more than 775,000 apps to choose from, which saw a combined 2 billion downloads in the month of December alone, qualifying it as a record month. Talk about ending the year on a high note.

Oh, and in case you're wondering, Apple's figures do not include re-downloads and/or updates.
