Call Of Duty Mobile Brings Free-To-Play FPS Action To Android And iOS Devices

Call of Duty: Mobile
Activision announced it is bringing its popular Call of Duty franchise over to smartphones and tablets with a new free-to-player version appropriately called Call of Duty: Mobile. It appears as though Tencent Games is in charge of the mobile experience, which will feature online multiplayer matches on "iconic maps," including the popular Nuketown map.

"Call of Duty: Mobile is a new, standalone mobile title that features a collection of fan-favorite maps, competitive game modes, familiar characters and signature weapons from across our beloved franchises, including Call of Duty: Black Ops and Call of Duty: Modern Warfare, into one epic experience," Activision explains.

Full details are still be hashed out, though it will be available to download from Google Play and from the iOS App Store for Android and iPhone/iPad devices, respectively. Minimum requirements have not been announced, perhaps because Activision is still figuring out what baseline hardware will be necessary.

In the meantime, Android device owners can pre-register on Google Play for a chance to be slotted into one of three beta groups. The beta program will run several months, during which time Activision and Tencent Games will "continue optimizing the experience" and fine tune the game.

"We are working every day both to optimize the game for high-end phones and to make it broadly accessible for as many other devices as well. Pre-register to stay up-to-date on all Call of Duty: Mobile information," Activision says.

Activision also released a short teaser video filled with intense action. At around the 42-second mark, there is a brief glimpse of helicopters and planes, which could hint that a battle royale mode will be part of the experience. That has not been confirmed, though it certainly makes sense on a free-to-play game, especially given how well PlayerUnknown's Battlegrounds and Fortnite fare on mobile devices, along with titles like Rules of Survival.

A release date for Call of Duty: Mobile has not yet been set.
