Call of Duty: Modern Warfare Early DLC Exclusive Continues To Favor Sony PS4
PlayStation 4 players will be the first to receive additional content related to Activision's upcoming Call of Duty: Modern Warfare game that was just announced. Sony has an exclusivity agreement with Activision that will see PS4 owners have access to downloadable content (DLC) ahead of Xbox One and PC players.
Sony confirmed the agreement in a reveal trailer for the game that was posted to its YouTube account on Thursday. Here's a look at the trailer...
Towards the end of the video (starting at the 1min42sec mark), a slide appears indicating that new content will arrive "first on PS4," as shown at the top of this article. The narrator reads the line out loud. In the fine print, it's revealed that the exclusivity period for DLC on the PS4 lasts one week.
"New playable content, when available, will launch on PS4 7 days prior to launch on other platforms. Content may be sold separately," the fine print reads.
This not a shocking development. In fact, it's not even mildly surprising. Activision and Sony have been BFFs when it comes to the Call of Duty franchise for the past several years, dating back to Black Ops III. There has been an exclusivity deal between Activision and Sony with every Call of Duty game since 2015. Prior to that, however, Microsoft got first dibs on its Xbox hardware.
While exclusivity stinks for platform-agnostic gamers (or, in this case, anyone that doesn't own a PS4), one good thing is that additional maps will be free. In the past, Activision has charged for these. There will also be cross-platform play support between the PS4, Xbox One, and PC. How that works with the PS4 getting first dibs on extra content is not yet clear.
