Call of Duty: WWII Campaign Trailer Is A Powerful Ode To The Greatest Generation

Call of Duty: WWII

Talk about intense—publisher Activision and developer Sledgehammer Games have released the first game trailer for the Call of Duty: WWII campaign, and it is a powerful one. The nearly two and a half minute clip does not feel like it is showcasing a game, but is something you would expect to see Hollywood put out for a full fledged movie.

Part of that is due to this campaign being a story-driven one. And of course the content plays a big role—is is World World II we are talking about, and about midway through the trailer it becomes clear that even though this particular story is fictional, Activision and Sledgehammer Games will be tapping into emotions based on very real atrocities, and specifically the Holocaust.

Naturally, it would be difficult to build a WWII game that completely ignores the Holocaust. But it is not often grabbed by the horns, as it appears Activision and Sledgehammer Games have done. It is obviously a delicate subject, and it will be interesting to see how the publisher and developer treat it in the game.

"Call of Duty: WWII tells the story of Private Ronald 'Red' Daniels, a young recruit in the U.S. First Infantry Division who experiences combat for the first time on D-Day, one of the largest amphibious assaults in history," Activision explains. "After surviving the beaches of Normandy, Red and his squad will fight their way across Europe, engaging the enemy in iconic battle locations such as the Hürtgen Forest and the Battle of the Bulge, as they make their way into Germany. The journey begins on November 3."

You can pre-order the campaign on disc or as a digital download for PC, Xbox One, and PlayStation 4. It releases November 3, 2017.
