Canon's New EOS M50 Mirrorless Entry-Level DSLR Shoots 4K Video

Canon has unveiled its latest mirrorless interchangeable lens camera called the EOS M50. Canon is very clear in calling this camera an entry-level unit, and the camera maker wants smartphone users to think of this as their step up from primary shooter. The EOS M50 will most certainly offer better image quality than any smartphone camera out there.

M50 has the distinction of being the first EOS M-series camera able to record 24fps video at 4K resolution. Canon also fits the M50 with a Dual Pixel CMOS AF, which is a 24.1MP APS-C CMOS sensor that captures images with less noise and higher definition in low-light situations.

"Our core goal when developing new entry-level interchangeable lens cameras for our consumers is to meld high-quality features and usability together. In listening to our customers, we believe we have achieved this goal with both the EOS M50 and EOS Rebel T7," said Yuichi Ishizuka, president and COO, Canon U.S.A., Inc. "With enhanced features for photographers of all skill levels to enjoy, both cameras demonstrate Canon's commitment to developing and manufacturing best-in-class quality imaging solutions."

Other features of the EOS M50 include a new DIGIC 8 Image Processor and the ability to shoot 60fps Full HD video. Since this camera is mirrorless, it lacks an optical viewfinder. It does, however, have an integrated OLED viewfinder that supports touch and drag autofocus. The LCD touchscreen on the back is a variable angle unit and the camera has integrated Wi-Fi, NFC, and Bluetooth. Those connectivity options mean that the camera can automatically transfer images to compatible devices while shooting.

The EOS M50 will sell for $779.99 for the body only starting in April. A bundle with the body and EF-M 15-45mm f/3.5-6.3 IS STM lens in black or white will sell for $899.99. Another bundle gives the M50 body, EF-M 15-45mm f/3.5-6.3 IS STM and the EF-M 55-200mm f/4.5-6.3 IS STM lens and will sell for $1,249.

Canon also unveiled the EOS Rebel T7 with a 24.1MP CMOS sensor able to shoot up to 3 fps with a 9-point autofocus system and a 3-inch LCD on the back. This camera also has WiFi and NFC, Scene Intelligent Auto Mode and an optical view finder. Canon is selling the EOS Rebel T7 starting in April for $549.99 including the camera body and EF-S 18-55 f/3.5-5.6 IS II.
